Milk Supply Maintenance

Hand expression, breast pumps, and breastfeeding supplies are not required or essential to breastfeed your infant, but many moms find them useful. The Coalition's Breastfeeding Resource List contacts and/or your healthcare provider can answer questions or concerns about expressing your breastmilk.

Hand Expression

Hand expression, or removing breastmilk from the breast using your own hand, may be recommended to express breastmilk and/or maintain milk supply if:

  • baby is unable to latch correctly

  • you are going back to work and/or school

  • you are away from your baby for long periods of time

  • you want to stimulate breastmilk production

  • you need to relieve pain or fullness from engorgement

  • you want to express breastmilk and do not have access to electricity

Breast pumps

Breast pumps can also be useful to remove breastmilk and/or maintain milk supply if:

  • baby is unable to latch correctly

  • you are going back to work and/or school

  • you are away from your baby for long periods of time

  • you are trying to re-lactate

  • your partner or other family members would like to help feed baby

  • you need to relieve pain or fullness from engorgement

  • you need to draw out flat and/or inverted nipples for infant to latch onto your breast

Your health insurance policy should provide a free breast pump. Check with your provider for details.

If you are a WIC participant, you may qualify to receive a breast pump depending on breastfeeding status and/or challenges.
